On the Road to Resilience
Coastal communities along India's long coastline are vulnerable to natural disasters and extreme climatic events. These events cause loss of life and livelihoods and loss of homes and hopes for people. Building resilience takes times and over the past few decades, these communities have adapted to these changes. Training in disaster preparedness and rescue and rehabilitation has further strengthened men, women and also children to feel more empowered and ready in the event of a disaster. These photos highlight some of the stories of community resilience and challenges, disaster mitigation and preparedness across some of the coastal states in India during the Road to Resilience bus journey. Several films were also produced showcasing their resilience.
More about the journey: The Road to Resilience to 'Cyclone Risk Mitigation and Recovery: Making India's Coastal Communities Safe' was a bus trip along the entire Indian coastline between January 10-February 15, 2016. This 10,000 kilometer journey provided implementation support for six coastal disaster management and climate resilience projects covering all ten coastal states of India, which are supported by the Global Facility for Disaster Reduction and Recovery. The bus journey was an opportunity to raise awareness about risk mitigation and long-term climate resilience along the country’s vast coastline.
